About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant heart of San Francisco’s Marina District, Mamanoko stands out as a dynamic Japanese restaurant that brilliantly fuses the spirit of an izakaya, sushi bar, dessert haven, and cocktail lounge into one unforgettable dining destination. At 2317 Chestnut St, this lively spot invites guests to experience a modern twist on traditional Japanese flavors in a warm, spirited atmosphere alive with energy and conviviality.

Mamanoko’s menu is a carefully curated celebration of Japanese cuisine, designed to excite every palate. From the moment you taste their Tonkatsu Sliders—with perfectly breaded pork cutlets nestled in fluffy buns—to the decadent Toro Cakes that melt luxuriously on the tongue, each dish is a textural and flavor journey. The sushi offerings, especially the Omakase 5-piece nigiri featuring chef Iwamoto’s wild-caught favorites from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market, demonstrate both reverence and modern innovation, showcasing pristine freshness and expert craftsmanship.

Fans of house rolls will be delighted with standout creations like the Kinobi Roll: seared bluefin tuna enhanced by a delicate truffle ponzu gelée and the satisfying crunch of crispy rice. Equally tempting are the WIKI WIKI and Hotsui rolls, pairing vibrant fish selections with inventive sauces and textures that invite exploration bite after bite.

But Mamanoko’s appeal goes beyond sushi. Their range of small plates and izakaya classics perfectly balance bold umami flavors and comforting familiarity. Dishes such as the crispy Brussel Sprouts with a savory glaze, melt-in-your-mouth Pork and Chicken Gyoza, and the rich Chicken Yakitori all contribute to a dining experience that’s wide-ranging yet cohesively Japanese. For something lighter yet equally satisfying, the Salmon Sashimi and Poke Tacos offer fresh, bright flavors that awaken the senses.

Dessert lovers will find their sweet cravings blissfully satisfied with unique options like the creamy Green Tea Basque Cheesecake, indulgent Brownie Roll, and the playful Ice Cream Roll. Each dessert reflects a thoughtful balance of tradition and innovation, bringing a delightful finish to a memorable meal.

Guests consistently praise Mamanoko’s vibrant atmosphere, describing it as “crowded and lively” even on quieter weeknights—a testament to the restaurant’s magnetic energy. This is a place where you can feel the buzz of conversation and the clink of cocktails, making it perfect for casual nights out or special celebrations. While service experiences have varied slightly, with some guests wishing for an extra touch of friendliness, most reviews applaud the knowledgeable and accommodating staff who help guide guests through their culinary journey with genuine enthusiasm.

Signature cocktails and an impressive sake selection, including rich and bold bottles like Makura no Yume and Kiminoi Emperor's Well, elevate the experience, inviting diners to pair perfectly balanced drinks with their meal and enhance every bite.

From its freshest sashimi to inventive rolls, from soulful izakaya bites to exquisite desserts, Mamanoko crafts a memorable dining experience that blends authenticity with innovation. Whether you’re a sushi aficionado or simply looking for a vibrant spot offering exceptional Japanese fare with a modern twist, Mamanoko delivers with style, flavor, and undeniable charm.

Came here on a Wednesday - still very crowded and lively atmosphere. We got the toro cakes, umami sliders, puchi puchi roll and seaweed salad and I recommend all of them 100%. I hate to say this because I had such a nice time otherwise, but the service wasn’t as friendly as I would’ve expected.

Good value happy hour rolls and drinks! We enjoyed the California roll, crunch roll, Brussel sprouts, and Kobe sliders. All in all, we would give Mamanoko a 3.8. Food was above average but didn’t blow our socks off, but restaurant had great vibes!

Soooo good. Awesome staff. I think I made some good choices. See the pics. And, I made a new friend who shared the miso cod salad which was so good. Professional and knowledgeable. Highly recommend

Not only did we enjoy the most amazing food but the staff were so delightful. They were all so very helpful with suggestions for our first visit. We will definitely be back! A few samples of our half eaten choices, so yummy we couldn’t wait for the photo

The food at Mamanoko was incredibly fresh and full of flavor. Their Miso soup is outstanding — a must-try. We were also pleasantly surprised by the dessert. The brownie dough roll was absolutely exceptional.

From the moment I walked in, the hostess was so kind and welcoming! Despite being full, she was able to accommodate my walk in at the bar and immediately felt good energy! I ordered the omakase and let me just say…each fish was aged and seasoned to perfection! Also, the Tuna Tataki is a MUST have! The ginger ponzu sauce was to die for and the crispy rice is just crunchy enough without being too hard. Ended with the tonkotsu sliders which were bomb! 12/10 will be back here again!
